A Design Journey. Chapter 5, The First Day

Farewell to being an employee and hello to being directors of our own company! On the morning of 20th October, Downforce Creative officially opened its doors to the world.

The first day felt like the culmination of months of planning, preparation and hard work. This was the day our vision became a reality; an opportunity to start with a clean slate, to set the tone and lay the foundation for future success. It was a day that we’ll reminisce about for years to come, filled with a mix of emotions ranging from excitement, anxiety and hopefulness. Starting a business involves a certain degree of risk, but we had already taken the leap and fully committed ourselves. Despite receiving cautionary advice from our loved ones about the challenges facing entrepreneurs, we were determined to invest our all in building a thriving business.

Fortunately, we had some work to keep us occupied. Our previous employer had given us a 2-month consultation period, which allowed us to finish off the year on a high note and make more strategic plans for the upcoming year. This also alleviated our concerns about starting a business towards the end of the year, when most work tends to wind down.

To kickstart our social media presence, we began our morning with a quick photoshoot beside our newly installed company logo. In an effort to keep our startup lean, we were unafraid to cut costs wherever possible. After receiving several quotes for a single backlit wall logo that exceeded £350, we decided to take matters into our own hands. Using a jigsaw and a template, we fabricated the logo from MDF in our garages. We then painted it and mounted neon strip lights to the back before finally affixing it to the wall. Not bad for a tenth of the cost! One advantage of being a small business is the ability to minimise costs and offer lower prices than larger agencies. Additionally, we believe that agility is essential to succeed in our industry. We can promptly respond to job requests and treat our clients with the respect they deserve. The only challenge now is to find some!
